M E D I T A T I O N

The Descent of the Holy Spirit

Our blessed Savior, before His Ascension, had commanded His Apostles not to leave Jerusalem till they should be filled with the Holy Spirit.

In obedience to that command, the disciples remained in the memorable Upper Chamber or Cenacle in Jerusalem awaiting the Comforter, Whom the departing Master had promised to send. Of a sudden, a quivering and shaking went through the house as in an earthquake; and a roaring noise filled the air. Over the head of each Apostle there appeared the form of a fiery tongue, and all of them were immediately filled with the Holy Spirit. From that moment they became endowed with the gift of tongues, and they spoke in different languages, as the Holy Spirit inspired them.

As soon as the noise was heard, a multitude of people gathered together and each one was amazed to hear his own language spoken by the Galileans.

In the roaring of the wind and in the fire of flaming tongues, the Spirit of the Lord had descended upon the Apostles. "And all were filled with the Holy Spirit." A wondrous miracle! The Apostles became living temples of God. The Holy Spirit enlightened their minds and their thoughts. That which had been obscure to them in Jesus' words and deeds, they now, in the light of the Holy Spirit, viewed from a new wonderful aspect. They now see their way clearly. Their whole being has been changed in a moment. Their interior is now seized by a supernatural power. The Spirit of God, like a glowing fireband, permeates their souls, consuming in them all that is weak and timid and enkindling in them a death-defying enthusiasm. Formerly they held their meetings behind locked doors for fear of the Jews, but now they courageously appear in public and preach the crucified Jesus.

St. Peter for the first time appears in public and begins to speak in the power of the Spirit of Fire. With far-reaching voice he informs his hearers. that what they saw and wondered at, was not the effect of wine, but of the Holy Spirit, Whom God had promised by His prophet Joel to pour out upon His people. The sermon of St. Peter was preached in a language so inspired and persuasive that no less than 3,000 upon conviction, embraced the true faith, and were baptized. Upon 3,000 the Holy Spirit descended with his baptismal grace on that First Pentecost. He made them disciples of Christ and members of His Church. Thus the Fisrt Pentecost is the foundation of the feast of the Catholic Church. Since this day, the Holy Spirit has never departed from the Church. In the course of the centuries He has often renewed the face of the Church and victoriously protected the bark of St. Peter when the waves of persecution threatened to engulf it. Cleansing and invigorating, in storm and fire, He passed through the members of the Church, and swept away that which was dried up, nd renewed that which had become lax. He led whole nations under the sweet yoke of Christ making them true Christian nations.

The Holy Spirit does not cease to work in His Church and in the world. As often as an eye opens itself to the light of faith, or a heart turns away from sin; as often as a soul is given sanctifying grace; as often as a Sacrament is administered, as often does the Holy Spirit give Himself.

E X A M P L E

St. Philip Neri suffered from a violent palpitation of the heart. In periods of deep emotions, the palpitation assumed an incredible force St. Philip had no doub that this was caused by the Holy Spirit. Towards the end of his life he gave Cardinal Frederick Borromeo his difinite confidences on the subjects: "He told me in all humility," said the Cardinal on the day that Philip died, "that the palpitation of his heart had begun in the following manner. At the beginning of his conversation he was praying to the Holy Spirit to give him fervor, and from that moment, he began to experience the palpitation which never left him."

On another occasion Philip experienced as it were a personal Pentecost. A globe of fire entered his mouth, and he afterwards feelt it wxpanding in his breast so much that some of his ribs were broken. The palpitation and the breaking of his ribs go back to 1544. In all this, his first fervors were so great that he had to throw himself down, crying: "Enough, enough, Lord, I can bear no more!"

Convinced that the Holy Spirit was acting in him almost incessantly, we cannot be surprised that St. Philip felt a special devotion to the Holy Spirit. Whener an opportunity is presented, he recommended the same devotion to others. We know, for example, how he advised Giovenale Ancina, his future disciple, to prepare himself for the Feast of the Pentecost; he prescribed prayers which were to be recited daily from Holy Saturday to the "Pasquarosa", or Pentecost.

St. Philip was further convinced that the Holy Spirit Whom he bore in his breast exercised His power and in some way operated outside himself. This explains why he had recourse to contact with his breast for the healing of physical diseases, or for the dissipation of interior anguish and temptations. He was accustomed to press his male penitents to his heart when he absolved them. His heart was full of sacred fire of the Holy Spirit.

A P P L I C A T I O N

The day of our Holy Baptism was the happy day on which the Holy Spirit came down into our soul, took possession of it and began to work in it, silently, as an artist working in his studio. Every Sacrament we received worthily, was an outpouring of the Divine Spirit over us. Day after day He gave His supporting grace.

Is the fire of the Holy Spirit still burning and glowing in you? The light and spiritual glow of the soul should never be extinguished by a mortal sin! Thank God for the Holy Spirit today for the grace of Holy Baptism and pray for the thousands of children who this day are born into the world, that they may receive the grace of Baptism and become temples of the Holy Spirit.

PRACTICE: Recall your baptsimal grace on Sunday when the priest sprinkles you with Holy Water before the Mass at the "Asperges"...


Prayer for the First Day

God Holy Spirit, I adore Thee as my true God. I acknowledge; here in Thy divine presence, that I am nothing and that I can do nothing without Thee. Come, then, great Paraclete and Comforter, fulfill the promise of our Blessed Savior and come into the heart of Thy unworthy creatures as Thou didst descend on the holy Mother of Jesus and on the Apostles on the sacred day of Pentecost. Make me understand that the wisdom of heavenly things surpasses all the wisdom, all riches and all the pleasures of the world. Amen.


Closing Prayer

M E D I T A T I O N

WHEN administering Confirmation, the Bishop with great solemnity calls down upon the one to be confirmed the sevenfold Holy Spirit. Also in the hymn of Pentecost there is mention of the Spirit sevenfold in His gifts.

The source for this doctrine of the seven gifts is the scriptural text in Isaias wherein the prophet proclaims that the Holy Spirit will descend in a sevenfold manner upon the coming Savior. According to the expressed will of Christ, His faithful, like branches of a vine, were to have life through Him; so this sevenfold heavenly gift, which would be given to those faithful, who are in union with Christ, their Head. The fullness of the Holy Spirit dwelt in Christ. In the hearts of the faithful, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are developed according to the providential designs of God and our cooperation with grace.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are therefore supernatural and impart such docility to our faculties that they promotly comply with the inspirations of grace. These gifts are developed through fervent prayer and mortification. The more pride, vanity, obstinacy and other passions in the soul are conquered, the more we follow with docility the inspirations of grace. Since the gifts of the Holy Spirit are so very important for the development of our interior life, we shall consider them in succession during the days of this Novena. May God the Holy Spirit give us the right understanding and a great desire for His seven gifts.

The Gift of the Fear of the Lord

The soul, which through mortification and prayer has opened itself to the Holy Spirit, is filled with that reverence and fear of the Lord which makes it recoil from the least offence of the Holy Spirit. Under the influence of the Divine Spirit, an instinct, so to say, is evolved in the soul which from afar already scents the danger of sin and therefore avoids everything which in any way could lead to sin.

This fear of the Lord avoids an excessive familiarity or presumption witn God. St. Therese of Avila speaks often in her writings of the "Majesty of God." This great Spanish mystic, inspired with the fear of God, was overwhelmed by the powerful and infinited Majesty of God. The liturgy of the church cultivates in us this fear of the lord by daily recalling to our mind the Majesty of God in the Gloria and Preface of the Mass. Filled with the fear of the Lord, the soul is not tempted to forget the infinite distance between God and itself.

E X A M P L E

The Holy Spirit fills the heart of man with the gift of the fear of the Lord. St. Francis Borgia had been a duke, and for many years was attached to the court of the Emperor Charles V. The chief aim he had proposed to himself was to win the favor of the Empress Isabella; he was, in fact, a great favorite with her. Now it happened that the Empress was suddenly attacked by a fatal malady, and died in the bloom of her youth. Francis Borgia was commissioned by the Emperor to conduct the remains of his imperial consort to Granada, where she was to be interned. On the arrival of the funeral cortege in Granada, the coffin was opened according to the prescribed usage, in order that the body might be seen by the officials, and identified as that of the late Empress. But what a sight met their view! The countenance of the deceased, formerly so fair, was disfigured beyond recognition, and a horrible effluvium pervaded the vault, rendering it almost impossible for the bystanders to remain there.


At that moment Francis' soul was illumined by a ray of the grace of the Holy Spirit. He said to himself: "Oh how speedily beauty, power and happiness vanish at a breath! What have I now for all the years that I served  my sovereign? Never again, will I serve a created being whom death can take from me. Henceforth, I will devote myself to the service of God alone." The next night he spent in prayer, and later on he entered the society of Jesus. After a time he was elected General of the Order. He died in the year 1572.

A P P L I C A T I O N

Consider sin as the greatest evil; for "sin brings distress to nations" as the Holy Spirit Himself warns us. Do not only avoid mortal sin, but also flee all deliberate venial sin, for it gradually leads to mortal sin. Avoid also deiberate occasions of sin, for "he who loves danger will perish in it". Pray much to the Holy Spirit for a delicate conscience.

PRACTICE: Keep your conscience in good order by daily making an examination of conscience.

Prayer for the Second Day

O Holy Spirit, Thou light of all that live, teach me to lead, with Jesus, a hidden life spent for God alone and to use creatures only according to His will. Let the beauty of God blind me to the beauty of the world and let the light of God blind my eyes to the light of the earth. Take away from my soul all dross and purify it by Thy heavenly grace, that, cleansed from all iniquity, my soul may rejoice in Thee, and detached from all vanities of the world, I may serve and love Thee, Who with the Father and the Son art one God. Amen.

M E D I T A T I O N

The Gift of Piety

THE Soul which by prayer and mortification seeks to free itself of all self-love, will eventually also be filled with the Gift of Piety. It fosters in us a child-like disposition towards the heavenly Father, and fills the soul with reverence and respect due to God. This gift makes us love with true brotherly and sisterly love our neighbors as children of God. Thus it brings forth that Justice which gives to God that whic is God's yet also gives to our fellowmen that which we owe them. Thereby Christ's greatest and holiest commandment of love is fulfilled with the help of the Gift of Piety. The Holy Spirit also fills the soul with that cheerful meekness which readily wins all hearts.

This Gift is all-important for the social life. It fills our soul with a great joy at doing a good deed and thus we are able to do for our fellowmen whatever lies in our power. At such times we can readily forgive our greatest enemy. We can stretch forth our hand to Him who inflicted great wounds upon us and say: "Let us forget all, let us be good friends again." But there are also times in our life when no mellow chords resound in our heart. Then we are not capable of a cheery word towards those who are next to us, let alone uttering a good word towards those who have insulted us. Our wounded pride rears up at the thought of the injustice done to us, heart cries out for retaliation.

When this state is predominant in your soul, remember that it is not the Spirit of God which has awakened these thought in your mind. The Holy Spirit is the God of Love.

E X A M P L E 

Bernard of Quintavalle once had invited St. Francis to dine with him. He had now wanted to find out for himself if it were true what the people said of St. Francis. At supper Bernard did not notice anything particular about St. Francis, so he resolved to watch him during the night.

Pretending to sleep, he observed how the saint, who had his bed on the opposite side of the room, rose quietly and knelt down to pray. A radiant glow went out from the saint, and he prayed but one short sentence which could be plainly understood, but always the self-same prayer with merely a different intonation. Hour after hour passed while St. Francis prayed the self-same prayer much to the astonishment of his host. The prayer which Saint Francis prayed during the night was: "My God and my All!"

St. Francis could well say this prayer, for he had left for God's sake his father, mother, brothers and sisters, relatives, a considerable inheritance, a multitude of enthusiastic friends, a life of luxury and pleasure, homage and respect of his fellowmen, and thus God was to him not only considerable, but All. If he now for hours at a time repeated this simple sentence, it was not the repeating of a mere prayer formula, but a prayer which came from the depth of his crystal-pure soul.

You have probably often prayed the same prayer. The Church has enriched it with an indulgence of 300 days. But such a significant prayer should not be spoken thoughtlessly. He looks into our heart and demands that we become as little children with the aid of the Gift of Piety.

A P P L I C A T I O N

What a good fortune it is to associate with persons who have this Gift of Piety! They are so simple and child-like in their affection for God and their fellowmen. One feels happy in the company of such persons who uprightly portray their souls in their countenance and in their words. How pitiable in comparison are the so-called "diplomats" who so craftily choose their words, and with whom one must always reckon whether they do not mean just the opposite of what they say, and whether with their words they are not simply endeavoring to hide their true intentions.

But it is also imprudent to put forth our thoughts and opinions without considering time and place. We must possess enough tact so as not to offend others by importunity. Otherwise we are often aftrewards forced to apologize, which is very bitter. In people who do not contradict themselves every week, one has confidence.

PRACTICE: Pray often to the Holy Spirit for the Gift of Piety and devoutly read the Holy Scriptures every day for they are, as Pope Leo XIII called them, "letters from our heavenly Father" written by the Holy Spirit.


Prayer for the Third Day

O Holy Spirit, Comforter of the weak, Who, descending upon the Apostles in Jerusalem, didst banish from their hearts all fearr of men, to Thee I turn for help. take from me all human respect and fill my soul with purest love of Jesus. That, inspired by His example and strengthened by Thy grace, I may faithfully comply with the duties of my state and endeavor to accomplish the divine will with utmost perfection. Amen.

The Gift of Knowledge

THE more reverence and child-like disposition develop in a soul, and faulty valuation of created things, the more it becomes receptive of true "Knowledge". This gift of knowledge enables us to perceive quickly and easily what concerns our salvation and easily what concerns our salvation and sanctification. It enlightens us as to the state of our soul. It makes the service of God by a pious life a sweet obligation, and at the same time fills the soul with a silent grief for the loss of time which is not employed for God and our sanctification. It helps us to look upod creatures with the eyes of faith.

So many people nowadays have their heart to the world. They strive after temporal goods, after earthly enjoyments, after the intoxication of carnal pleasures, after the joys the senses. To be sure, the world does show a laughing countenance and mirthful lips. Yet the joys of earthly comfort which cannot satiate the soul, the joys, which are fleeting like the flash of lightning in the evening sky, deserve not the name of JOY. The world cannot offer man true joy, because ut is selfish and ungrateful.

There are people who are attached to God, yet do not forsake the world . They are the undecided. It is incompatible to respect the divine commandments, and at the same time to conform ourselves to the views and demands of men contrary to the divine precepts. It is impossible to be a child of God and at the same time slave of the world.

The gift of knowledge helps us to understand better the importance of Christ for our life. We must become CHRIST-like! Our whole religion is concentrated in this Sacred Name. Christ is the beginning and end of the Church, of the ecclesiastical year, of Church history and is the center of the history of the world. We have all in Christ! Do you seek a healing for your wounds? He is the Physician. Are you consumed by a fever's heat? He is the refreshing Spring. Are you weighed down under the weight of injustice? He is your Justice. Are you in need of help? He is your Strength. Do you seek nourishment? He is your Food. Do you flee darkness? He is your Light. Do you fear death? He is the Life. Do you wish to go to heaven? He is the Way. Christ is the richest treasure of our soul. He is the Bliss of our heart, the Joy of our soul, the Sun of our life.

E X A M P L E

In the lives of most great men we may see that often only one idea is the driving force of all their actions. Thus the ruling idea of St. Aloysius was the pharse: "What doth if profit me for eternity?" Eternity was for him the radiant light tower in the nocturnal shadows of this life; the shore towards which his bark hastened; the standard by which he measured all transitoriness.

While visiting a church in Florence, he by chance saw the famous fresco of the Annunciation of Mary. He was enthranced by it. Thereafter he visited the church everyday and there performed his devotions. About this time , a book on the rosary fell into his hands, out of which he now could meditate on the Glories of Mary. His heart was filled thereby with consolation. As he once again prayed before the Annunciation, a wish entered his heart to do something great to honor Mary. He prayed on and considered what might give joy to the Mother of God.

At a later visit, the inspiration came to him that he should consecrate his virginity to the Blessed Virgin. This was the great deed which Mary desired of him. His resolve was quickly made, and he then and there, with great earnestness and with a joyful and love-growing heart, before the picture of the Annunciation, made the Vow of perpetual chastity. The Queen of Heaven gladly accepted the sacrifice of the child. In recompense, she obtained for Aloysius the grace that throughout his whole life he was never assailed by a violent temptation against holy purity. Through this vow he felt himself called to the priesthood. From this his thoughts went over to the religious life. It was on a feast of the Blessed Virgin that the saint obtained full charity as to his vocation, through the intercession of Mary, the Immaculate Spouse of the Holy Spirit.

A P P L I C A T I O N

Do you wish you know how you stand? Ask yourself: "Where is my heart?" Be honest in your answer. Or what do you like best to think for the future? What is the desire of your heart? What object or what state seems to you ideal? Now examine how this secret goal of your heart looks. Is it something divine, noble, or is it something earthly, lowly? Have you the life's aim of a child of God or that of a slave of the world? Pray for the Gift of Knowledge that you may efer more make your heart free from the fetters of your passions and of the world, that you may learn to give the entire love of your heart to God alone. Only then will you be truly happy, for: "restless is our heart until it rests in Thee. O God", rightfully says St. Augustine.

PRACTICE: Always invoke the help of the Holy Spirit before the important actions of the day; to see and do the Will of God.

Prayer for the Fourth Day

O Holy Spirit, Who, in the Sacrament of Baptism, didst come into my heart, abide in it and lead it on the narrow way of the Cross. Detach it from my lower and selfish nature and make it free to serve Thee. Speak to my soul in prayer and meditation, in works of light and consolation and make it strong against the attacks of the devil, that in innocence and simplicity I may walk on the way of my eternal salvation, and loving and serving Thee, merit to possess Thee for all eternity. M E D I T A T I O N

The Gift of Fortitude

CLEANSED from self-love and filled with humble reverence, filial love and sacred knowledge, the soul is furthermore equipped by the Holy Spirit with a supernatural fortitude. Holy Scripture is full of proofs of this "Spirit of Fortitude." This Spirit was which impelled the Apostles to courageously travel over the earth in order to preach the Gospel; they even boasted of their infirmities (2Cor. II), but at the same time proclaimed as did St. Paul, "I can do all things in Him Who strengthened me." (Phil 4, 13). This Spirit of Fortitude in all ages animated the martyrs, from the first martyr St. Stephen down to the recent blossoms of Christian heroism in Russian, Spain and Mexico. This Spirit of Fortitude enabled a poor  aging servant to become th founders of the gigantic order of the "Little Sisters of the Poor" the same spirit enables missionaries to leave parents and homeland and fills with unconquerable courage of faith the faithful in those lands where evidence of a neo-paganism have began to show itself.

At the same time with the Gift of Fortitude is infused an ardent desire after sanctificationof the soul, the true zeal of soul. A mighty "thirsting and hungering after justice" (Matth. 5, 5) fills the soul, an apostolic urge to promote the glory of God in oneself and in others.

E X A M P L E

St. Agnes has always been looked upon in the Church as an example for the Gift of Fortitude. She was only 13 years old at the time of her glorious death. Her riches and beauty excited the young nobleman of the first families of Rome to contend as rivals for her hand. Agnes answered them all, that she had  consectrated her virginity to heavenly Spouse, Who was not to be seen by mortal eyes. Her suitors, finding her resolution unshakeable, accused her to the governor as a Christian. The judge at first employed the mildest expressions and the most seductive promises to which Agnes paid no regard, repeating always, that she could have no other spouse but Jesus Christ. He then made use of threats, but found her endowed with a masculine courage, and even eager to suffer torment and death. At last, terrible fires were made, and iron hooks, racks and other instruments of torture displayed before the girl who surveyed them undismayed, and made good cheer in the presence of the fierce and cruel executioners who were ready to dispatch her at a word of command. She was so far from betraying the least symptom of terror that she even expressed her joy at the sight , and offered herself for the rack. She was then dragged before idols, and commanded to offer incense, but could by no means be compelled to move her hand except to make the sign of the cross.

The governor,seeing his measure ineffectual, said he would send her to a house of bad reputation. "You may", she said, "stain your sword with thy blood, but you will never be able to profane my body, consecrated to Christ!" She was led immediately to the place of shame, but the one who attempted to be rude to her, was that very instant struck blind by a flash of lightning from heaven and fell trembling to the gorund.

Later on, the judge condemned her to be beheaded. Agnes, transported with joy on hearing this sentence, "went to the place of execution, more cheerfully", says St. Ambrose, "than others go to their wedding". The spectators shed tears to see this beautiful child loaded with fetters, and offering herself fearlessly to the sword of the executioner.

A P P L I C A T I O N

In our interior life we often meet difficulties. In order to overcome them, we need very much the strength of the Holy Spirit. Without His help, we easily give way to sloth which brings no progress. In this deplorable state of soul we have only desires and mere wishes, but we show no courage. We easily consent when passion urges its satisfaction. We make many good resolutions, but only in minds. When we have to carry out the resolution, our enthusiasm fades away and we are discouraged. Oh, how we need the strength of the Holy Spirit to overcome our human weakness, a consequence of original sin.

Fickle characters are not fit for the great struggle which Satan is waging against our souls. Christ says: "Whosoever putting his hand to the plough, looks back, is not worthy of the kingdom of heaven." Let us pray to the Holy Spirit for the grace to be persevering till the end of our lives.

PRACTICE: Pray for the priests and missionaries that they may have the gift of fortitude in their arduous labors and that many young hearts may be brave to offer their lives to spread the divine Word in priestly and religious vocations.

O Holy Spirit Who didst deign to strengthen my soul in the holy sacrament of Confirmation, help me to overcome the spirit of the world, the concupiscence of the flesh and of the eyes, and the pride of life which rule supreme in our times. M E D I T A T I O N

The Gift of Counsel

What we admire in the great saints of God is not only their heroic strength and perseverance in doing good, but also the instinctive certainty with which they went the way prescribed for them by God. This is the fruit of the Gift of Counsel. This gift is all-important for our interior life and is too little appreciated- We often consider it only necessary on days of important decisions as for choice of a vocation, etc., to deligently pray to the Holy Spirit. It is true that in these decisive moments we must pray especially for this Gift, because we then stand in such great need of it.

We too easily overlook the fact that the daily influence of the Gift of Counselbreally makes the lives of the Saints possible. A saintly life does not only consist in performing extraordinary deeds, but much more in the performing of the common everyday tasks in the most perfect manner. For this needed a supernatural facility to always see, at every moment, what is the most perfect, most pleasing to God. A saintly life is nothing more than doing that which God demands of us at every moment of the day."Lord! What wilt Thou have me do?" (Acts 9:6), thus the soul inquires with the Apostles, not only in decisive hour, but so to say every day and every hour anew. And as to Saul before Damascus, the answer came from heaven, so also to the mortified and cleansed from all self-seeking, and through prayer made receptive, the interior answer comes from God, from the Holy Spirit of Counsel. Through this comes the security of the saints in their deeds.

E X A M P L E

It has been said of St. Thomas Aquinas that he summed up in his person all the science of his age. He has enlightened the Church more than all other doctors by his teachings. St. Louis, king of France, held him in such esteem, that he constantly consulted him on important matters of State.

A great testimony to his resolution as counselor was the resolution of the University of Paris to refer to his decision a delicate question about the Holy Eucharist. Saint Thomas, after fervent prayer, wrote his answer in the form of a treatise; his decision was accepted by the university afterwards by the whole Church.

The saint received from our Lord's own lips a formal approval of what he had set down. Appearing in a vision, the Saviour said to him: "Thou hast written well of the Sacrament of My Body."; and almost immediately afterwards, Thomas passed into ecstasy and remained so long raised from the ground that there was time enough to summon many brethren to behold the spectacle. Of the noble character of St. Thomas we may consider two virtues, which may be of great profit to us, his spirit of prayer and his humility. He was ever wont to declare that he learned more at the foot of the crucifix than from books.

The prudence of the saints by which they knew to draw eternal merits from fleeting moments, is but the natural sequence of the Gift of the holy Spirit, to Whose counsel they have listened in the simplicity of their hearts. To symbolize this we often see St. Thomas pictured with a Dove speaking to his ear.

A P P L I C A T I O N

How important it is for us, that in all things we first look to the will of God which must be the guide of all our thoughts and actions? Likewise, we must endeavor  to walk in the presence of God. If we, as it were, live under the eyes of the omniscient God, it will not be hard for us, through frequent raising of our hearts to Him, to ascertain His most holy will.

In order to practice the presence of God, we must also be recollected. If we give ourselves up to work and labors in such a manner that we become slaves of our actions, then we can never attain to the spirit of true recollection, for "the kingdom of God is within us!"

PRACTICE: Frequently recall that you are a temple of the Holy Spirit Who dwells in you and Whom Jesus brings to you in a special manner in each Holy Communion. The Tabernacle of the Holy Eucharist should remind you of the tabernacle that you yourself are.

Prayer for the Sixth Day

O Holy Spirit, Who didst form the sacred humanity of Jesus out of the purest body of His Blessed Mother, help me to receive Jesus in Holy Communion with that love and fervor with which His Blessed Mother received Him. Make my soul long to receive Him in the mystery of the altar and be thou with me when I approach the sacred table. O sanctifier of souls, have mercy on my poor soul and prepare it as a worthy dwelling place of Jesus. Amen.

Closing Prayer

O Holy Spirit, Creator, be propitious to the Catholic Church and by Thy heavenly power, make it strong and secure against the attacks of its enemies and renew in charity the spirit of Thy servants, whom Thou hast anointed, that they may glorify Thee and the Father and His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

O Holy Spirit, Spirit of truth, come into our hearts; shed the brightness of Thy light on all nations that they may be one in faith and pleasing to Thee. Amen.

O Paraclete Divine, Thou art called the "Forgotten Paraclete" for so few there are who invoke Thy divine intercession. Forgive me, dear Paraclete, for I too have ugratefully neglected Thee.

O Holy Paraclete. Spirit of adoption of the Father, I believe that Thou hast made me a Child of God in the Sacrament of Baptism. Guide Thou my poor prayers for without Thee I know not how or what I should pray to obtain my desire. O Paraclete Divine, Spirit of Fortitude, Thou hast strengthened me in Holy Confirmation. I hope in Thy aid, and entrust my petition to Thee. Do not forsake me, dear Paraclete Divine!

O Spirit of Love! Thou dwellest in my heart by sanctifying grace as the most precious gift that Jesus has given to me from the Father. may I love Thee in every beat of my heart and renew my petition together with Thee and in union with those who have joined in this prayer. In reparaton for my neglect, I shall do all in my power to spread devotion to Thee. O Mother Immaculate Spouse of the Holy Spirit and my Patron, keep me near to my Paraclete. Amen.
